Molinari brothers eyeing Omega Mission Hills title

Molinari brothers eyeing Omega Mission Hills title

Wednesday, 23 November 2011 12:35 PM
Italian professional golfers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari are looking to recreate their memorable victory of two years ago at this weekends Omega Mission Hills World Cup, taking place at the Mission Hills resort in China. Kicking off tomorrow November 24th, the event will see the siblings aim to mirror their performance at the 2009 tournament, where they came from behind to enjoy a one-shot victory over Ireland and Sweden. Elder brother Edoardo, 30, has since suggested the pair will attempt the same approach as they look to defend their crown on the Blackstone Course, which is situated on Hainan Island. That worked well for us last year so we have done exactly the same this year, he told the European Tour website. It will just be the two of us and our caddies so it will be nice and quiet and hopefully with the same result. The Italians will go up against a host of world-class international talent at the highly anticipated event, including a South African duo made up of Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and last years Open victor Louis Oosthuizen. Having been friends since childhood, the talented compatriots have emerged in the footsteps of a number of legendary South African golfers including Gary Player, Dale Hayes and Ernie Els. Meanwhile, Els and fellow countryman Retief Goosen are set to go head-to-head at the upcoming South African SA Open Championship this weekend at the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate, where they will compete for the 1 million 860,000 prize fund. The pair have a history of monumental clashes in the tournament, with Goosen clinching the title on two occasions and his rival winning three times, including last years competition at Durban Country Club. Goosen managed to hold off Else to take the crown in 2005 and 2006, while Elss 2010 victory was achieved despite his opponents astonishing run of four birdies on the last five holes. There is something indescribable about winning your national Open, revealed Goosen. That second win was just as sweet. It felt great winning again on home soil and having the SA Open trophy in my hands again. The tournament will see a number of homegrown talents attempt to clinch the title, including Thomas Aitken, George Coetzee and Alfred Dunhill Championship winner Garth Mulroy - who became the 100th South African winner in European Tour history. Englands Simon Dyson will also take to the field at the SA Open Championship, where he will hope to become the first English winner since Tommy Horton took the top spot in 1970. .. Full Story

Tiger Woods leads US to victory in Presidents Cup

Tiger Woods leads US to victory in Presidents Cup

Monday, 21 November 2011 11:27 AM
Former world number one Tiger Woods has led his US teammates to victory in this weekends Presidents Cup in Melbourne after clinching the winning point during his victory against Australias Aaron Baddely. The talented professional beat his opponent four and three to give his squad the 18 points required to retain the title, which was strikingly similar to his victory against YE Yang in the 2009 cup where the US won the title for the sixth time. Woodss teammates enjoyed a 13-9 lead against their international rivals going into the singles round on the final day, but lost four matches before the 35-year old managed to seal the victory. I played well all week, but unfortunately didnt make any putts in the first four matches, Woods told BBC Sport. Today was a different deal - they poured right in. His impressive performance comes as US captain Fred Couples, who is celebrating his second victory in charge of the US side, praised his performance after selecting Woods as a controversial wildcard due to a series of injuries and poor performances among other players. I got frustrated a bit by the attacks on his selection because I felt I was picking the greatest player Ive ever seen play, he commented. The triumph comes after the international players, who have failed to win the trophy since 1998, proved they meant business during the opening moments of the final day, with Australias Adam Scott beating the previously undefeated Phil Mickelson by two and one. KT Kim, South Africas Charl Schwartzel, Ryo Ishikawa and Geoff Ogilvy also helped to provide the international side with some hope, but the talented bunch failed to make the cut as their opponents stormed to success. Meanwhile, Irelands Padraig Harrington failed to take the top spot at the Johor Open in Malaysia this weekend, where he was defending his title, after finishing in joint third place at 13-under-par in the rain-affected competition. The 40-year-old finished just two strokes behind Dutchman Joost Luiten, who took the crown for the first time at the event following a final round score of 66 where he came from behind to triumph against overnight leader Daniel Chopra. Im a little disappointed with the finished result, but you cant win them all, said Harrington. Welshman Rhys Davies and Englands James Morrison joined Harrington in third position on the leaderboard at the Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club, where the tournament was reduced to 54 holes after heavy rain affected play on Saturday November 19th. .. US team dominate on opening day of Presidents Cup

US team dominate on opening day of Presidents Cup

Thursday, 17 November 2011 12:53 PM
Players from the US professional golf team have dominated the green during the opening round of the Presidents Cup today November 17th, as they stormed to a 4-2 lead against their international opponents. Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyks four and three defeat of Robert Allenby and Retief Goosen captivated the crowd, while David Toms and Hunter Mahan prevailed six and five over South Korean pair KT Kim and YE Yang. Competition debutants Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson became the first to claim a point for the US team as they triumphed four and two over Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa in a thrilling game in the opening round. However, the game that attracted the most attention was Tiger Woods and Steve Strickers surprising loss against Australias Adam Scott and South Koreas KJ Choi, where the underdogs held a 4-2 lead over the former world number one. They got off to a good start and we just couldnt keep up, said a disappointed Woods after the clinch. We kept the ball on the wrong side of the slopes and this golf course is so difficult that its hard to make up shots. They shot four under par on us. US partnership Duston Johnson and Matt Kuchar recovered from two down with two to play to halve their match with Aaron Baddeley and Jason Day, with Nick Watney and Bill Haas also enjoyed late success for a share of the points with Geoff Ogilvy and Charl Schwartzel. Haas has impressed golf enthusiasts in recent times after triumphing three times during the last two years, including the season-ending TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola, which resulted in his victory at the FedExCup. This week, being here, puts a lot of things in perspective like how good these guys are and its an honour to be playing with them and against them week-in and week-out. It humbles you but also fires you up to get better, he told the PGA Tour website. Earlier this week, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem announced South Korea would be the next international venue for the Presidents Cup, which will represent the tournaments first trip to Asia. While the specific site is yet to be determined, Finchem highlighted the increasing popularity of golf across the continent among the reasons for selecting the location. He was also joined by KJ Choi, KT Kim and YE Yang to make the announcement. Each Presidents Cup has been bigger and better than the one before, and Im confident South Korea will serve as the perfect stage for the event when it enters its 21st year, he added.  .. Full Story
