Dustin Johnson takes Immediate Leave of Absence

Dustin Johnson takes Immediate Leave of Absence
Dustin Johnson released a statement yesterday confirming he will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from professional golf, effectively immediately.

The world number 16 cited “personal challenges” and the need to “seek professional help” during this time.

The statement from Johnson’s agent reads, “I am taking a leave of absence from professional golf, effective immediately. I will use this time to seek professional help for personal challenges I have faced. By committing the time and resources necessary to improve my mental health, physical well-being and emotional foundation, I am confident that I will be better equipped to fulfill my potential and become a consistent champion.

I respectfully ask my fans, well-wishers and the media for privacy as I embark upon this mission of self-improvement.”

Johnson gave no solid reason for the shock decision, leaving many to speculate on the actual cause behind the announcement.

Earlier this week, the TaylorMade player pulled out of the WGC-Bridgestone in Ohio for “personal reasons.” Johnson’s announcement yesterday proved to take many of his fellow players by surprise after their first rounds at Firestone.

“Dustin and I are close, it’s tough to hear,” said Jason Dufner. “He’s the type of guy the Tour needs.”

Johnson currently sits at number 4 in the FedExCup standings, meaning he was one of 9 automatic qualifiers for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in September. A position the 30-year-old will now be passing up.

“Yeah, that’s a big loss,” said Jim Furyk yesterday.  “He’s one of our horses, one of our best players, and a guy that’s having a really good year.  He’s been solid on that team for a long time.”

With the U.S. team captain Tom Watson adding, “We will certainly miss Dustin Johnson at Gleneagles, and we wish him the best.”

Europe’s captain, Paul McGinley went a step further when speaking to Sky Sports stating that the vague announcement will only lead to rumors and speculation regarding Johnson’s decision.

“Things will be said that are not true,” said McGinley.  “It's much better for everyone if there is clarity.  If something has gone wrong and he has been misbehaving, let's put it out on the table and get it dealt with and move forward.”
