Factory Worker Tees Off at the Open Championship
A factory worker named John Singleton teed off at the Open Championship this morning. Starting the first round of his first-ever major tournament with 8 consecutive pars.

It’s the stuff great movie scripts are made of. Singleton who lives in the Wirral, not far from Royal Liverpool, earned his Open spot earlier this month in a sudden-death playoff during a qualifier.

The 30-year-old previously tried his hand at the professional golf arena in the U.S. but was sidelined by knee injuries that kept him off the course for the last few years.

In the springtime, Singleton decided to once again give the sport he loves another shot. With the support of his family and employers Singleton continued to work in a factory during the day while working on his golf game at night.

His commit seems to have paid off, giving Singleton the chance of a lifetime this week as he competes against some of the biggest names on Tour, including his playing partners John Daly and Dustin Johnson. The later of whom asked Singleton yesterday if he played on the European Tour, to which he replied, “No, I work in a factory.”

Today as Singleton competes in the biggest event of his life he will see the sidelines filled with familiar faces.  All 30 employees of the resin factory have been given the day off to go and support their colleague. Also on hand will be his family, including his fiancée, Lucy Johnson who’s 8-months pregnant with the couples first child. Something Singleton is very much aware of.

“I hope she’s okay and doesn’t get too stressed out and worried,” he said. “We’ll just see how it goes. There are enough friends and family who can shout me from the sides if Lucy is going into labour and if that’s the case I’ll take it from there.”
