Fitzpatrick Proves He’s One to Watch at U.S. Amateur
Matt Fitzpatrick is having the summer of his life.  Making waves at the Open last month, where he won low amateur honours and tied for 44th, Fitzpatrick has now won the U.S. Amateur in Brookline Massachusetts.  A feat that hasn’t belonged to an Englishman since 1911.

The 18-year-old from Sheffield has been described more than once as the next Luke Donald.  An easy comparison when you discover that Fitzpatrick will be following in the Mizuno player’s footsteps as he begins his degree and plays for the golf team at Northwestern University in the fall.

While the young Fitzpatrick appreciates the links being made between himself and one of the top players in the world, he’s quick to point out that Donald had little to do with his decision to study in the states.

“I wanted to get an education and golf,” said Fitzpatrick, “and I couldn’t do that in the UK.  I needed something to fall back on if golf doesn’t work out.”

Judging by the performances he’s shown in the last couple of months we imagined he won’t need the buffer!
