Daly using old rules to his advantage with Ping golf equipment
With the current rule changes regarding the grooves on golf irons and golf wedges now in full flow, some players are looking to use 20-year-old clubs to their advantage, the Associated Press reports.

Players are still permitted to use Ping golf wedges made before April 1990 because of an old lawsuit regarding the use of square grooves that remains approved under the rules of the sport.

However, the one dilemma facing players is that no new models fitting this criteria are allowed to be reproduced, meaning players will need to visit some boot sales or hunt around in their garages to see if any can be found.

John Daly is one player taking advantage of the stipulation at this week's Sony Open after locating three Ping-Eye 2 wedges and is authorised to send them to the manufacturer to repair the shafts and get the lie and loft altered.

According to the news provider, he said: "Ping said the ones I have are all good to go. I think a lot of guys are going to switch. I know a lot of guys are buying them off eBay."

Daly has picked up two major victories during his career, landing the 1991 PGA Championship when called in as a late replacement and then taking victory in a play-off in the 1995 Open Championship.
