Anger at Midlands golf course closure
Home secretary Jacqui Smith is among those who have expressed their opposition to a planned closure of a golf course.

Pitcheroak Golf Club is Redditch's municipal venue and has been earmarked for closure by the local Conservative-led council.

The councillors have cited cost cuts that must be made as a factor behind the decision, the land has been earmarked to be turned into a public park.

Ms Smith, MP for Redditch, suggested that the council should seek out private investment into the venue.

She told the Birmingham Mail: "Conservative-led Redditch Borough Council are considering a series of cuts to front line services when they should be sorting out the shambles of their management structure."

Continuing: "Conservative councillors should consider bids to run the golf course from outside and look properly at their back room costs before slashing services and events for Redditch people."

There are fears that local players will now be priced out of the sport, with many neighbouring clubs charging a lot more than the £10 per round at Pitcheroak.
