Tiger Woods made his return to competitive action after almost two months out with an error-strewn round at the Frys.com Open in California.
The former world number one - now languishing in 51st place in the rankings - endured a nightmare with the putter, missing two short birdie putts, one from six feet and another from even closer.
After completing his two-over-par round of 73, the 14-time major winner told reporters he had work to do on the practice greens.
"That's probably one of the worst putting rounds I've ever had," he remarked. "I just had a hard time hitting my stroke and then I started altering it. I started losing confidence in it because I wasn't hitting my line, so it was just a downward spiral.
"I think I'm going to go put some lead tape on it [the putter] and see if maybe I can get a little bit more mass. It's always worked in the past."
Brendan Steele, Briny Baird, Matt Bettencourt and Garrett Willis held the joint lead overnight after shooting rounds of four-under-par.
