GolfOnline’s Top Golf Moments of 2014

It has been a pretty impressive year in the world of golf. From the European’s triumph over Team U.S.A at Gleneagles to Lydia Ko’s astounding first season as a pro, we have been privy to an exciting and sometimes comical 12 months on the greens.
Here’s a look at a few of our favourite moments from 2014.

Is that an 11-year-old teeing off at the U.S. Women’s Open?

That’s right, back in May 11-year-old Lucy Li won a qualifier in her home state of California. Giving her entry to one of the biggest tournaments on the Ladies’ schedule and making her the youngest-ever player to qualifier for the major.

Li might not have made the cut but her presence at Pinehurst was definitely felt. Maybe it was her outfit or the post-round interview she gave while eating an ice cream. Either way, we loved it!

Rory proved 2014 really was his year…

In a season where he not only regained the top spot in the world rankings, Rory McIlroy also won back-to-back majors, the Race to Dubai and picked up the European Tour’s Player of the Year award. When you’re hot, you’re hot, and McIlroy was on fire throughout 2014.

Check out video of the Nike golfer’s amazing approach shot and eagle putt at Royal Liverpool back in July. Try not to swoon.

Bubba Watson’s Incredible Bunker Shot at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai

After bogeying the 16th and double bogeying the 17th Watson told his caddie at the 18th bunker, “It's been a miserable couple holes here, but this will change everything if it goes in.”

Wow, was he right! Check out the amazing shot that got Watson into the playoff he won to claim his first-ever World Golf Championship.

Michelle Wie Finally Finds Major Success

She has been the biggest name in women’s golf for almost a decade. Having turned pro just before her 16th birthday, big things were expected from Michelle Wie.

Back in June, Wie proved she was worthy of our high hopes, securing her first major title at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst.

Is that a Golf Ball in your pocket?

We promise this isn’t the first line to some bad joke but rather a question Rory McIlroy might have had to ask one spectator at the Tour Championship in September.

Check out the video below of McIlroy’s tee shot that lands in some guy’s pocket. Proving he’s worthy of his superstar status, McIlroy takes the episode in stride and even still manages to make par!

Jamie Donaldson Secures Victory for Europe at Gleneagles

It’s the moment we waited for the most in 2014 and we loved watching Team Europe deliver a proper thrashing to the boys from the U.S.A. Check out Jamie Donaldson’s wedge shot that secured the winning point.
