Martin Kaymer Hangs in Despite Rain Delay to Win the Players Championship
Martin Kaymer has ended a winless streak on the PGA Tour that goes back to 2010. Claiming victory at the Players Championship on Sunday after a 92 minute-rain delay.

Kaymer started out the weekend at TPC Sawgrass with an incredible 63 last Thursday, equaling the club record. While he wasn’t able to come close to his first round score in the remaining three days, the German still played incredibly well, staying at the top end of the leaderboard throughout the tournament.

On Sunday Kaymer looked to be holding steady with a three-stroke lead and five holes left to play. But inclement weather forced tournament officials to pause play for 92 minutes. When it resumed the light was fading and it appeared Kaymer might quickly be following suit.

The 29-year-old looked to be struggling after the delay, picking up a double bogey on the 15th and nearly going into the water on the dreaded 17th.  But Kaymer was able to hold on with an amazing putt on the 17th to finish at 1-under 71 for the day. Claiming a 1-stroke victory over American Jim Furyk.

“It was a shame we had to stop playing. It is always difficult to come back after a little break,” Kaymer said. “I was really disappointed when they called it. I was playing so well. Then I made some bad decisions. But the putt on 17 was big.”

The former number one appears to be regaining his game and confidence after struggling in recent years. Kaymer last won at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa back at the end of 2012. Sunday’s win has given the golfer hope for his future on Tour and definitely put him back on the radar for many.

"The belief is always there. I knew I could win a golf tournament again,” said Kaymer afterwards. “I knew I was doing the right thing. I just didn't think it would take so long.”
