Rory McIlroy Named the European Tour’s Player of the Year
After an astonishing year on the golf course, Rory McIlroy has won the European Tour Player of the Year Award for the second time in three years.

The world number one might have lost out to Lewis Hamilton for Sports Personality of the Year this past weekend, but it hasn’t stopped McIlroy from earning some much-deserved recognition for his incredible season.

A season in which the 25-year-old not only conquered four events but also earned back-to-back major titles at the Open Championship and the PGA Championship at Valhalla.

“To be named the European Tour’s Golfer of the Year for a second time is a huge honour and one I am extremely proud of.  If I had won any one of those four titles it would have been a good year, but to win all four, to win The Race to Dubai, and to be part of another fantastic European victory in The Ryder Cup, means it is a great one.”

This latest achievement makes McIlroy the youngest player to have ever won the honour multiple times.  And comes as 2014 is remembered as one of the finest years worldwide for the European Tour and its players.

“The 2014 season will go down as one of the greatest in the European Tour’s history, and it will be defined by Rory McIlroy’s astounding accomplishments on the global stage,” said the European Tour’s Chief Executive, George O’Grady.

Adding, “Rory is a fine ambassador for the game of golf and a loyal supporter of The European Tour, as he has shown with his backing of the Irish Open next year, so we are all very proud of his success, not only during this year but across his career to date.”
