Fans of
golf from across the globe will descend on the Ayrshire coast for the 145th
Open Championship, which will take place at Royal Troon.
Representing the ninth time the event has been held over the famous links, the tournament will see some of the biggest names in the world of sport battle it out for the top spot.
The last time Royal Troon played host to the competition, veteran US professional Todd Hamilton held off three-time major champion
Ernie Els in a nail-biting play-off clinch.
Announcing the 2016 Open venue as the world's best amateur golfers face the challenge of the course in the final stages of the Amateur Championship, Jim McArthur - chairman of the R&A Championship Committee - said he is delighted about the news.
"I am sure that Ayrshire, with its historic connection to the Open, will once again provide a superb setting for the game's oldest major championship," he added.
