legends Jose Maria Olazabal and Colin Montgomerie
will be among the hopefuls entered for next month's US Open
, which is set to take place at the Olympic Club, San Francisco.
Europe's current and most recent captains will join 87 competitors at Walton Health Golf
Club today (May 28th) for the sectional qualifier.
Depending on the ability of the final field in Surrey at the BMW PGA Championship over the weekend, between nine and 12 places will be available for the second major of the 2012 season.
Montgomerie, who led the European side to victory at the 2010 Ryder Cup, has competed in a total of 16 US Open Championships with three runner-up finishes, while Olazabal has 18 appearances in the tournament to his name.
The 89 golfers will compete over 36 holes that will determine the successful qualifiers, while a play-off round will be used to establish the final places in the event of a tie.
