Sergio Garcia gets “fired” by his Girlfriend

Last month Sergio Garcia secured his first and only victory of 2013 at the Thailand Golf Championship with girlfriend Katharina Boehm as his caddie. But the Spaniard is taking on the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship this weekend without her help, revealing she “fired” him.

“I wanted to keep going, but she fired me,” joked Garcia yesterday. “It was something she wanted to do since we started dating, and I thought that would be a good week, being the end of the year and maybe a little bit more relaxed.”

Making his 2014 debut in Abu Dhabi, Garcia is hoping to continue the surge he created towards the end of last year. After a difficult 2013 on and off the greens, including an issue with world number one Tiger Woods, 34-year-old Garcia is looking forward to the year ahead.

Telling reporters, “It was probably a tough three months at least, but it was a good learning experience. I thought that we learned a lot from it and I think that it made us even stronger.”

So will Boehm be making a return appearance to the golfer’s bag this season?

“I think it turned out pretty good, but I think we’ll leave it,” said Garcia.  “She has a good winning percentage at the moment.”
