The rough at Muirfield claimed its first victim on Thursday, a high-definition lens worth a reported $80,000.
As Thomas Bjorn teed off on his first hole, the Danish golfer ended up in the rough only to hit his second shot directly into an ESPN camera lens.
The damage was swift and costly. Fortunately no one was hurt, but Bjorn’s unorthodox camera-bounce shot left him in no better position for a third go. Leaving him with a double-bogey on his opening hole.
ESPN’s Rick Reilly tweeted a tongue-in-cheek message to the Dane, “Thomas Bjorn, you owe ESPN $80,000 ...” Accompanied with an excellent visual of the damage.
The 42-year-old went on to show the effective form he’s been using on the European Tour so far this season, where he’s had a number of top ten finishes. Ending the first round with a solid two-over par.
