Monday 21 April, 2008
The new Earth course, part of Dubai's most prominent residential golf complex Jumeirah Golf Estates, is to play host to the first Dubai World Championship tournament in November 2009, the PGA European Tour has announced.
Greg Norman had a hand in the design of the Earth course, which is one of four "elementally-themed" courses to be opened on the site and will now be the initial home of the world's most lucrative golf tournament, with a prize fund of $10 million (£5 million) up for grabs.
Australian Norman, an Open winner in 1986 and 1993, spoke of his pleasure at contributing to the course which will stage next year's event.
He said: "As a golf course architect, it is both rewarding and challenging to know that this course will be hosting the Dubai World Championship.
"Of course, Jumeirah Golf Estates will be showcased on a global basis and as the golf course designer, I'm proud to be a part of such a significant event."
The Fire and Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates are due to be ready for play by the end of the year.
