Bulgaria is planning to put itself on the golf tourism map with a programme of heavy investment into course infrastructure in coming years.
A backing of some 300 million which would help fund the development of venues, possibly in the Black Sea region of the country, could be secure if the state agrees to help private investors, reports the Sofia News Agency:
Chair of the National Tourist Board, Krassimir Gergov, pointed to neighbouring Turkey as a good example of how golf can have a positive impact on tourism.
Bulgaria has signalled its intentions to become known as a golf destination with the upcoming hosting of the Bulgaria Open this September, which is expected to attract players from over 20 countries.
A new venue - one of many springing up around the country - will be open in the Black Sea resort of Balchik in June. The course is being designed by South African legend Gary Player.
