After seeing the growing competition its charity golf tournaments were receiving from similar events, the Hopkinton Education Foundation of Massechussetts, US, has come up with a novel way of attracting interest to its annual fundraiser.
A dustbin full of golf balls will be dumped from a hot air balloon out on to the school field and the nearest to a makeshift pin will win $1,000 (£500), reports the MetroWest News.
Some 1,000 balls will be numbered, with donors paying $10 (£5) to be in with a chance of the big prize.
A $100 (£50) consolation payment will also be handed to the owner of the ball furthest away from the hole - which will be positioned according to the landing spot of an initial ball drop.
Organiser Maureen Belger told the newspaper: "We were trying to think of something different, something to draw some interest."
First of all, the haul of golf balls must be gathered and residents are being urged to clean out there garages in search of the spheres.
Meanwhile, electronic retailers Sony have launched a set of mini home theatre speakers said to be the size of golf balls.
