Despite a second place finish at last week's Italian Open, Oliver Wilson could have beaten Hennie Otto to the title had it not been for a bout of putter rage earlier in the tournament, it has emerged.
Englishman Wilson was forced to play the back nine of his second round with a wedge, after bending his putter by banging it forcefully against his bag in a moment of frustration.
Wilson ended up going round in 69 on the second day - his highest score of the event, which was eventually won by South African Otto by one shot.
Considering the consequences of the incident, the Mansfield-born golfer told the Press Association: "I'm proud of myself. I could have easily let that get to me and blow myself out of the tournament.
"But I didn't and to shoot eight under on the last day, I can't complain. Going out six behind, I just went to get second more than anything."
The victorious Otto is no stranger to club damage - he once snapped a whole set in half before throwing them into a river following a round of 80 at the South African Masters.
