Gloves

A well fit glove can help with many different things apart from the obvious. They are most useful when the weather starts to get a bit nasty, either when you are sweating from the heat, or have damp hands from the rain. When your grip of the club becomes compromised you really will need gloves to make sure it stays in your hands.

Synthetic materials are widely used for golf gloves and are of similar quality to the more expensive cabretta leather. Cabretta leather gloves tend to be more comfortable and breathable and may be worth it if you can bear the cost.

As you improve (and as your grip improves), you may find that you do not need to wear a glove any longer. Several tour professionals (most famously Fred Couples), believe that they can grip the ball equally well without a glove, and actually receive better feedback from the club without one.

Although you should not wear them when playing shots, it is a good idea to invest in a warm pair of winter gloves to keep your hands warm in cold weather. When your hands get cold, blood flow is restricted and your ability to judge “feel” is compromised.

Gloves can be especially useful when you are new to golf as they can highlight problems with the way you grip the club. Excessive wearing on the palm can be an indicator that you are holding the club incorrectly and losing out on power.
