Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke ended a European Tour drought with victory at the BMW Asian Open in Shanghai.
The Ulsterman had not won an event on the tour in nearly five years before a momentous 40 foot putt on the 18th in yesterday's (Sunday, April 28th) final round gave him the win.
Clarke's last hole heroics brought him to eight-under par for the tournament, one clear of Holland's second-place Robert-Jan Derksen. After dropping shots on the 16th and 17th and seeing a superb Derksen chip clinching a par on the 18th, Clarke admitted he had to knuckle down for what proved to be a title-winning stroke.
He said: "On the last green I gathered myself and said hit a good putt. Luckily I did and it went in." Clarke continued: "I have been working harder than I have ever worked on all aspects of my game, putting in nine, ten 11 hour days and it is nice to see it pay off."
Following the death of his wife from cancer in 2006, Clarke has struggled with form. The 39-year-old's previous win came at the 2003 WGC - NEC Invitational in Ohio. Darren Clarke used the following clubs made by TaylorMade to win:
