English golfer, Andy Sullivan has bagged his first European Tour title. Beating Charl Schwartzel in a sudden-death playoff at the South African Open.
The 28-year-old from Nuneaton got off to a good start finishing at the halfway mark on Friday at 8-under-par. But a difficult Saturday round combined with the great form of Schwartzel saw Sullivan entering the final day 7-strokes behind with little chance of catching up.
However the late collapse of Schwartzel’s game, 2 bogeys and a double bogey over the final five holes, allowed the Ping player to level the field, forcing a sudden-death play off with the South African.
A tremendous 12-foot putt on the first play off hole sealed Sullivan’s fate, making him only the second English-born player to have ever won the event. An accomplishment the young golfer is more than happy with.
“To just play on the European Tour is something I've wanted to do my whole life, so to win an event just caps it all off and to do it in South Africa where I have always enjoyed playing, it has just been an incredible week,” Sullivan told reporters afterwards.
