Since turning professional in 2002, South Africa's Charl Schwartzel has established himself alongside some of his home country's finest golfers - including Retief Goosen and Ernie Els - and has earned himself legions of loyal fans during his illustrious career.

Playing on the European, PGA and Sunshine tours, the talented 27-year-old has enjoyed a number of titles, with his first coming at the 2004 Dunhill Championship in a nail-biting play-off round against Englishman Neil Cheetham.

His most notable victory came at last year's Masters Tournament, where he took the coveted green jacket over Australian duo Jason Day and Adam Scott by two shots with birdies on the final four holes to hit a final round of 66 and six-under-par.

The win came at the same tournament Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy signed for an eight-over-par 80, despite entering the final round with a sensational four-shot advantage.

Schwartzel's victory - which saw him receive his first ever major title - was uncertain until the very end of the competition, while his final shots were likened to those of South African legend Louis Oosthuizen, who won the 2010 Open Championship at St Andrews.

"Louis and I grew up together and we are great friends," commented the victor. "Seeing what he did to win the Open Championship inspired me and made me think I could win a major, too."

Despite remaining somewhat under the radar on the golfing circuit until that point, Schwartzel's abilities have been widely acknowledged by those in the sporting world for many years - leaving some unsurprised by his stunning performance.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1984, the talented professional enjoyed a successful amateur career on home soil before winning overseas events including the 2002 Indian Amateur and English Open Stroke Play Championships.

Following in the path of a number of other great players from the nation, Schwartzel turned professional at the age of 18 and qualified for the European Tour later in the same year - becoming the second youngest countryman to do so after Dale Hayes.

Since then, he has enjoyed five wins on the Sunshine, seven on the European and a single victory on the PGA Tour, while he is currently positioned 12th on the official world golf rankings.

He recently announced his wishes to prepare his own barbeque for his Champions Dinner at Augusta, claiming he is not a fan of "very formal dinners" and would prefer guests to enjoy a taste of his homeland.
