Swedish professional Peter Hanson has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in the world of golf that dates back to 1998. Although he has not reached the heights of other players on the European Tour, the talented competitor is renowned for his ability to play alongside some of the sport's best-known characters.
Despite never winning a major championship, the 34-year-old has carded some respectable finishes, including a seventh place finish in the 2011 US Open, as well as joint third place at the Masters in Augusta National this year.
While competing in Georgia, Hanson made a late surge to take a one-shot lead over US professional Phil Mickelson into the final round of the competition with a 65 on the penultimate day - the best round of the tournament.
Mickelson had fired a 30 on the last half of the course for a 66 to join Hanson in the last group to pursue his fourth green jacket in nine years.
Of course, neither Hanson or his US opponent were destined to take the crown on that fateful day, as Mickelson's compatriot Bubba Watson overcame the odds to steal an emotional victory, but Hanson has since stated he holds no lingering disappointment.
Despite shooting a two-over 73 to finish in a tie for third place, the professional revealed he was "very proud" of his performance, stating the hard feelings he felt after leaving the difficult course left "pretty quick".
His performance at the event two weeks ago comes after a series of near-misses during the 2012 season and represented his fourth top-five finish.
The Swede's most recent win on the European Tour came at the 2012 Czech Open, where he sank a stunning 18-foot birdie putt at the second play-off hole to move into the top nine of Europe's Ryder Cup table with only a week of the race to go.
Despite not being involved in the penultimate event of the year-long proceedings until offered an invitation, Hanson looked close to blowing a four-stroke lead on the final day of the Czech Open, but managed to sink a birdie on the long 16th then par the last two to tie with Peter Lawrie and Englishman Gary Boyd on ten-under.
The 34-year-old was born in Svedala, Sweden in 1977 before competing on both the Challenge and European campaigns after turning professional in 1998. He was also a member of the Continental Europe team in the 2005 and 2007 Seve Trophy, as well as competing for Europe in the 2010 Ryder Cup.
