British Masters to Return after Seven-Year Absence

British Masters to Return after Seven-Year Absence
Last week it was announced that the British Masters is set to return to the European Tour schedule later this year for the first time since 2008.

Its resurgence signals a welcomed sign for many British golfers hoping to get more of a buzz going on home soil. The event, planned for October at the Woburn Golf Club, will see England’s Ian Poulter take over hosting duties at his home club.

Before teeing off at last week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship, Poulter confirmed the news stating, “The UK has been starved of some fantastic golf venues and fantastic tournaments through the years, so it’s great that we’ve got this one back.”

Adding, “It will be very popular with all the guys out here on the tour. I know we’re going to get a great strong field and it’s up to us to be able to grow the game of golf back in the UK.”

Over the next four years Poulter will share hosting duties with Lee Westwood, Justin Rose and finally Luke Donald in an attempt to bring in more sponsorship and get fans excited about the top English golfers returning home.

The European Tour Chief Executive, George O’Grady also shared his excitement regarding the announcement and how he hopes it will influence the future of golf in the UK.

“Having four of our top players and leading ambassadors – Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood – take on the role of tournament host will also help raise the profile of the event on its return to our calendar, and underlines the appetite among our membership for tournament golf in Britain,” said O’Grady.  “I am sure these players, and this tournament, will help inspire a new generation of fans to engage with golf and take up the game in Britain.”
