Friendly Game of Football Turns Disastrous for Rory McIlroy

Friendly Game of Football Turns Disastrous for Rory McIlroy
On Monday Rory McIlroy announced he would be withdrawing from this week’s Scottish Open due to ruptured ligaments in his left ankle.

The 26-year-old took to his Instagram account to show the world just what can happen when friends get together for a game of football.  Posing in a boot and standing on crutches, McIlroy confirmed his injury telling followers.

“Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday. Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started..... Working hard to get back as soon as I can.”

This is a huge setback for the World Number One who was looking to defend his Open title at St. Andrews later this month.  With this injury it’s anyone’s guess whether McIlroy will be able to play in the major.  CNN reports a spokeswoman from the Nike player’s management company as saying there was a “10% chance” he’d be able to play come July 16th.

Odds are the Northern Irishman will be forced to sit this one out.  Giving more attention to another young rising star – Jordan Spieth.  Spieth, who has already won the first two majors of 2015 is heading to St. Andrews as a strong favourite.  With his biggest rival possibly out of the picture, will Spieth’s path to a career grand slam in the same year be that little bit easier?
