Henrik Stenson Confirms He’ll be Heading to Brazil

This week golfer Henrik Stenson made it known he plans on playing for Sweden at the Olympic games next month and even managed to add a little humour to the moment.

The Callaway Golf player made the announcement while speaking to reporters ahead of this week’s Scottish Open.  Stating, “I’m not afraid of mosquitoes.  I’m more afraid of bears.”

While many of the top players in the world including World Number One Jason Day and Rory McIlroy have decided against competing at the games in Rio, Stenson said he was looking forward to representing his country, a chance he has always dreamed of.

“If I can go there, compete and compete well, if I make myself and my country happy, that would be something very special,” said Stenson.  “I have a few nice trophies at home, and it would be nice to hang an Olympic medal next to them. I think that would look kind of cool.”

The 40-year-old admitted that he is in a different position than some of the other golfers.

“I’m in a different situation, and it might be the only time when it’s a competitive advantage to be 40-plus and done with the bambino thing,” the World Number six explained.  “I’ve got three kids at home, and I’m not looking to have any more.  I might be in a different situation then, but the Zika virus is not a concern of mine.”

Another golfer to confirm he’ll be at the Olympics regardless of the Zika situation was World Number 12 Sergio Garcia.  Announcing his decision on Twitter the Spanish player stated the games in Rio were too important to miss.
