Henrik Stenson Stuns at Troon to Win First Major Title
Henrik Stenson has secured his first major victory, winning The Open Championship after a stunning final round 63.

The Swedish golfer had a storybook Sunday at Royal Troon, defeating Phil Mickelson by three-strokes with a record-breaking 20-under par. Beating the former best Open score of 19-under by Tiger Woods. Both Stenson and Mickelson dazzled during the final round but it was the Swede who was ultimately able to hold his nerve and get the job done.

“It’s disappointing to come in second, but I’m happy for Henrik,” Mickelson told reporters on Sunday. “I’ve always thought that he is one of the best ball strikers in the game and that major championships are perfectly suited for him. I knew that he would ultimately come through and win.  I’m happy that he did.  I’m disappointed that it was at my expense.”

At 40 years of age Stenson is the oldest Open Champion since Mickelson won the title in 2013. Both Callaway players proved to be a step above the rest this weekend at Royal Troon.

“Those guys are playing a different golf course than everyone else,” said J.B. Holmes who finished third, 14-shots behind Stenson and 9-strokes behind Mickelson.

For Stenson, winning the Claret Jug was a career highlight after 42 major appearances.

“I felt like this was going to be my time,” he said.  Adding, “It makes it even more special to beat a competitor like Phil.  He’s been one of the best to play the game, and certainly in the last 20 years.”
