Huge Sinkhole Re-routes 13th Hole at Kansas Golf Club
Have you ever wished for a giant hole you couldn’t miss when teeing up?  Well for some Kansas golfers it’s one wish that’s become a huge reality.

Last Friday, members and staff at the Canyon Farms Golf Club in Lenaxa, Kansas got one big surprise on the 13th hole – a gigantic sinkhole that’s estimated to be 8 to 10-feet deep!

Opened in 2007, Canyon Farms is partially built on what was once a 50-acre open pit quarry with 60-foot sheer rock walls.

The club has stated on its Facebook page,

“On Friday, June 19, an isolated sink hole appeared east of Hole 13 on the Canyon Farms Golf Course in Lenexa, Kansas. Portions of the golf course are constructed over a non-operating limestone mine. The area where the sink hole appeared had subsurface conditions inferior to the rest of the mine. A safe perimeter has been secured around the site. The majority of the mine is considered stable according to various geotechnical studies. Excessive groundwater from the wet spring is believed to have contributed to stress on the mine roof at that location. The mine is being evaluated and a course of action to stabilize this portion of the mine will be determined shortly.”

As for the disturbance it’s causing players, one member, Doug North told local news station, KCTV5, “Well, I think we finally found a hole big enough where I can finally make a putt maybe.”
