Lydia Ko is continuing to do what Lydia Ko does best – WIN! Securing her 11th LPGA tour title at the Kia Classic on Sunday, 4-strokes ahead of South Korea’s Inbee Park.
Ko finished the tournament out in style, birdying the final three holes to finish at an incredible 19-under 269. The 18-year-old held off world number two Inbee Park by remaining cool and calm as only Ko can.
“I just kind of peeked at the leaderboard and saw Inbee was making a lot of birdies; Inbee doing her Inbee things,” said Ko. Adding, “I knew that I needed to focus up until the last moment and fortunately I made some birdies down the stretch.”
The current number one in the world is proving she’s worthy of her top status as she firmly looks ahead to this week’s first major of the year, the ANA Inspiration Championship. While Ko’s appearance last year at ANA didn’t go that well, she finished 51st, the Callaway player is confident her game is more than ready for the challenge this year at Rancho Mirage.
“I didn’t strike the ball very well last year there,” Ko told reporters after her Kia Classic win.
“Hopefully, I’ll be able to hit a few more fairways and give myself a good chance. Obviously, it helps to have played well here [at the Kia Classic] going into the first major of the year.”
One person who definitely thinks she has another major win in her is her coach David Leadbetter. Speaking to New Zealand’s Radio sport, Leadbetter confessed there’s little he can actually do for Ko now.
“She is in such a good place mentally right now,” Leadbetter said. “When you are playing like that, you just want to keep playing.”
Adding, “She is making the game look so easy.”
