Mickelson Finally Captures a British Victory

Mickelson Finally Captures a British Victory
It has taken over two decades and a sudden-death playoff but Phil Mickelson has finally added a British win to his number of successes.  Capturing the Scottish Open title just four days before the British Open begins.

After a rocky start on Sunday, the 43-year-old looked poised to capture the championship after a beautiful back nine.  But a disastrous falter at the final hole, which saw Mickelson blow his birdie putt four feet past the hole only to then miss the return, left him tied with Branden Grace at 17 under par.

Despite fears he had lost his nerve, Mickelson was able to swiftly regroup.  Sinking a birdie putt the second time around to capture a win that means a lot to the American.

“This is really cool.  I have been coming here for some time and had some opportunities and I almost let it slip away today.  To come out on top was terrific,” he remarked after the victory.  “I was so mad at myself for mentally losing my focus that I came out on that 18th pretty focused to make a four.”

Mickelson will now be looking firmly ahead to Thursday’s start at Muirfield.  Hoping to build upon the momentum he ended with at Castle Stuart, to next conquer a major this side of the pond.
