Nick Faldo Receives the 2014 Payne Stewart Award
Yesterday Sir Nick Faldo was named the recipient of the 2014 Payne Stewart Award, but was forced to miss the reception due to his father passing away just hours before.

The honour is bestowed on a golfer who exemplifies the values, character, charity and sportsmanship of the late Payne Stewart. Marking the 15th anniversary of the award, Faldo joins the ranks of past winners including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson and Gary Player.

As a six-time major champion, Faldo has enjoyed a lustrous career that includes 39 tournament victories worldwide. But it’s the Faldo Series, which he created in 1996 that has led to this latest accolade.

Established almost two decades ago to identify and help nurture the future talent of the sport, the Faldo Series is a youth golf program that has seen the likes of Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng come through its ranks.

“Nick has used golf as a platform to inspire people around the world, much like that of Payne Stewart,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. “He has set a wonderful example for today’s youth and made an impact on countless lives. He will make a great addition to the list of recipients.”

Although it proved to be a difficult day for the Faldo family, the golfer’s son was on hand to accept his father’s award, with the elder Faldo joining in from London via satellite to express his pleasure at receiving the incredible honour.

“I’m delighted to be recognized in the name of one who was a true individual, a one-of-a-kind personality in this game and one who will always be remembered so fondly by his fellow players and golf fans around the world,” said Faldo.
