Phil Mickelson Makes Presidents Cup Team Despite Lowest-Ever Ranking
American golfer Phil Mickelson has been named as a captain’s pick for the 2015 Presidents Cup Team despite being ranked #30 in the world.

He might not have a win since 2013’s Open Championship, but Mickelson has still managed to make his 11th Presidents Cup Team. Proving his passion and wisdom in a group play setting is still majorly valued.

U.S. captain Jay Haas announced yesterday his decision to take Mickelson as well as his son, Billy Haas to South Korea next month.  While his selection of the younger Haas wasn’t a total surprise (he’s ranked #11), Mickelson’s uneventful season might make him seem like an odd choice.

However, Haas revealed yesterday that his selection of the 45-year-old came after careful consideration between himself, his assistants and even fellow players.

“If anyone deserves a pick, it’s Phil Mickelson.  He is without question the leader of our team in the team room, on the golf course.  I think the guys trust him 100 percent,” Haas told reporters.

Adding, “The guys on the team were adamant that Phil is the guy, and I think between the captains and team members, Phil was an overwhelming choice to be a pick.”
A revelation Mickelson was more than thrilled with.

“I am so honored to be on this team,” said the Callaway player.  “And to have it come from input from so many players and assistant captains wanting me to be on the team means a lot to me that I couldn’t put it into words.  It’s just a very special honor to be on the team.”

The Presidents cup is set to tee off October 8th and is being played for the first time-ever in Asia.  Jay Haas and his team will be looking for their 6th consecutive victory this time against Nick Price’s International Team.
