Rickie Fowler remained poised under great pressure yesterday as he came from 5-shots behind to force a three-man playoff and win The Players Championship.
It was a case of perfect timing for the 26-year-old who secured his second victory on Sunday, just six days after being named one of the “most overrated” players on the PGA Tour by his peers.
Fowler, whose first PGA Tour win came at the 2012 Wells Fargo Championship, might not have a ton of titles under his belt but over the past year he has remained a consistent presence at the top of the leaderboard. Finishing T2 at last year’s U.S. Open as well as runner up at The Open Championship. Posting great scores but just never able to seal the deal.
That all changed yesterday as the Cobra player set his sights on victory at TPC Sawgrass and quickly began setting the course alight. Coming from 5-strokes down with six holes remaining, Fowler was a man on a mission. Closing out the tournament tied with Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner to force a tense and extremely entertaining 4-hole playoff.
Fowler came out on top, first picking off Garcia after three holes and then sinking a clinch putt on the fourth and first sudden-death hole to claim victory over Kisner.
“I felt really good all week, this is special,” Fowler told reporters afterwards.
And what about that opinion poll in Sports Illustrated?
“I laughed at the poll,” said the young golfer. “But if there’s any question I think this right here answers anything you need to know,” added Fowler as he patted his latest trophy.
