Rory McIlroy to Front New Video Game instead of Tiger Woods
Earlier this week EA Sports announced the June release of its newest video console game, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, featuring the world’s number one golfer, the first non-U.S. player to ever front the campaign.

While McIlroy’s star has been on the rise for quite some time, this is the latest example of the Nike player usurping former number one, Tiger Woods.  Since 1998 Woods has been the face of the game and the name in its title.  But like so many other areas of his career, that baton is now being passed on to the younger McIlroy.

“I’m very proud and humbled to see my face and name on EA SPORTS Rory McIlroy PGA TOUR,” the 25-year-old confirmed this week.  “This is a great honour, and something I couldn't even dream of growing up playing the sport.”

The honour will also see a large increase into McIlroy’s already hefty yearly earnings.  With reports suggesting the release will generate approximately $100 million USD in sales within the first 12 months.  Equaling a huge cut for the Northern Irishman.

“With the prospects of what he has accomplished and where he’s going, it’s a great time to develop this relationship,” Brent Nielsen, the executive producer of EA’s PGA Tour said.

Adding, “Rory appeals to that coolness factor.  Rory becoming the face of golf and speaking to a younger generation is a big asset.  It’s definitely an asset that we want to lean into.”

Check out the game’s trailer here available for X Box One and Playstation 4.
