The Distance Control Game

It's widely known that improving your putting is the quickest way to lowering your golf scores, with everyone from tour professionals down to the total beginner needing to practice.

Reducing the number of 3 putts in a round is paramount to a good score and keeping the momentum of your round going.

Here’s an exercise Ian Poulter taught me when I was a young golfer. You can play this game against your friends, playing for each other’s golf balls to add a bit of pressure!

What you need:

How it Works:

Start at any distance.

If you leave the golf ball short of the hole you have to take the ball a putter length further away and then putt from there, with the same rules applying to your next putt.

If your golf ball finishes level with the hole or within a club’s length past, you can leave it and then putt from there with the same rules applying.

If your golf ball goes further than a club’s length past the hole, you must move it another putter’s length away and then putt from there, with the same rules applying.

This really gets you focusing on getting the ball just past the hole and promotes a good speed.

Scoring:

Wherever you are, the hole is always a par 2, so if you have 3 strokes you’re one over or if you hole a long putt and get a 1, then you’re 1 under. Once you have played 9 or 18 holes you can see who has the lowest score and they win.
