American golfer Scottie Scheffler continues to thrive in 2022, securing his first ever major championship win at the Masters in Augusta on Sunday. This mark’s the 25-year-old’s fourth win in just six starts.
Scheffler, who’s game dominated the tournament, finished with a one-under 71, three strokes clear of Rory McIlroy. Coming into the final round with a three-shot lead, Scheffler got some heat from McIlroy on the last 18, but the Texan was able to hold his nerve – even as he three-putted the last hole - to earn the coveted green jacket.
“I tried to keep my head down and execute shots. I knew if I took care of my stuff and played solid stuff, I’d get the job done,” Scheffler told reporters afterwards. Adding, “I’m kind of glad I missed those putts at the end because it meant I didn’t get too emotional.”
With a meteoric rise, comes intense scrutiny, something Scheffler was extremely open about after his win. Admitting that he felt unready for it all and had “cried like a baby” on Sunday morning, but that his wife managed to calm his nerves.
Scottie Scheffler, open and honest about his nerves: “I cried like a baby this morning. I was so stressed out. I was like, I don’t think I’m ready for this.”
With his fourth win in eight weeks, Scheffler has also banked a hefty payday of $2.7 million. As well as becoming only the third golfer in the last 40 years to win the Masters aged 25 or younger, joining Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.
