Zach Johnson wasn’t the winner most were betting on, but by last night the unassuming golfer had secured the Open Championship, marking his second major title victory.
For only the second time in its history the Open was extended to a fifth day of play after rain and wind delays disrupted play on Friday and Saturday. The Monday finish proved successful for three golfers, including Johnson, who finished yesterday at an incredible 15-under-par.
Alongside Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman, Johnson continued to battle it out over three play-off holes on the Old Course at St. Andrews. Ultimately, winning after Oosthuizen missed a putt that went just a bit too wide.
Johnson was clearly overwhelmed by the result. Tearing up on the green as congratulations poured in from his caddie, wife and world number two, Jordan Spieth, who many picked to win the event.
“Dreams have been realised and goals accomplished,” Johnson told reporters afterwards. Adding, “I’m humbled right now because of what’s in my lap and the names that are etched on this piece of metal. That is very special. It’s the who’s who in the game.”
He might not have considered himself a big deal before yesterday but with a Green Jacket from his 2007 Masters win alongside the newly acquired Claret Jug, it’s obvious Johnson is now firmly a part of golfing history. A position the 39-year-old is just going to have to get used to!
