Last week we heard Adam Scott would not be making the trip to Rio, citing a packed schedule and wondered how many other big name golfers would be following suit. It wasn’t long before Oosthuizen and Schwartzel, both South African, announced they too would be skipping the Olympics.
In statement South Africa’s captain, Player has expressed his disappointment in their decision. Stating, “I am sad and disappointed that several top players have withdrawn from the Olympic Games in Rio.” Player added, “I would have given anything to play in the Olympics. South Africa had a great team, but now obviously, it will not be as good.”
McGinley, the former Ryder Cup captain who will lead the Irish Team in Rio, has also expressed his frustration as more professional golfers pull out of the games.
Telling Sky Sports, “My view is that it’s important to showcase the game of golf and for our best players to be out there.” McGinley adds, “It’s important we put on a good show and try and grow the game around the world.”
An opinion it seems that is shared with many who are using social media to vent their views on golf’s return to the Olympics after a 112-year absence. While we are sure there will be more withdrawals to come Player believes the professionals today owe it to the game to participate in the Olympics, regardless of scheduling conflicts.
“Players today make so much and should be giving back,” wrote the 9-time major winner. “The Olympics is one way they can do that since there is no prize money. Golf is one of the most popular sports in the world and our best players should be showcased on the biggest stage in sports.”
First Adam Scott now @Louis57TM withdraws from #Olympics. What’s with these guys? How can they not want to try to win an Olympic Gold? #golf

Louis Oosthuizen is the next big name to make himself ineligible for the Olympics this year..... And I doubt he will be the last! #STP

Louis Oosthuizen joins Adam Scott in skipping the Olympics because if you have a perfect golf swing, you don’t really need a gold medal.
