Rory McIlroy Excited for “stability” in 2014

At a press conference yesterday, ahead of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, Rory McIlroy spoke about the difficulties he experienced last year on and off the course. Telling reporters he’s excited for 2014 and believes it will provide the stability he has been missing both personally and professionally.

Twelve months ago McIlroy began his much-anticipated 2013 season. After an incredible 2012 on Tour many were excited to see what the Northern Irishman would do and how he would fare after switching from Titleist to Nike. But legal battles, equipment adjustments and constant speculation over his love life seemed to quickly derail the 24-year-old.

“There was a lot of instability,” said McIlroy. “There was loads of stuff going on around me and that didn’t let me focus 100 per cent on what I needed to do, which was to try and play the best I could.”

By December things finally looked to be improving for the golfer. With his win over Adam Scott at the Australian Open McIlroy began to make a definitive turn after a turbulent year.

The Nike player’s next move involved his personal life as he became engaged to the tennis player Caroline Wozniacki on New Year’s Eve. A decision McIlroy believes will only help in creating the consistency he needs to continue winning on the golf course.

“Everything off the course is set and I’m in a great place.  I’m happy.  So there is no reason why I shouldn’t be smiling.  I’m feeling good about my game. I feel good about where I am mentally.  I feel good with everything that’s going on off the course.  It’s hopefully shaping up to be a good year.”
