Sergio Garcia Bogeys Away His Lead, Leaving Room for Henrik Stenson to Claim the Deutsche Bank Championship Title

by Maura Hutchinson

After a fairly unproductive season on the PGA Tour, Sergio Garcia had everyone thinking this might be the tournament to turn it all around.  But a poor showing on the front nine yesterday proved too much for the Spaniard to overcome.  Leaving room for Sweden’s Henrik Stenson to come from two strokes behind Garcia, the overnight leader, to head straight to victory.

A final round of 66 solidified Stenson’s place at the top of the leaderboard on Monday.  With an overall score of 22-under, the 37-year-old put himself in the company of other golfing greats as he tied the Deutsche Bank record shared by Charley Hoffman and Vijay Singh.

Stenson has had an extremely strong summer on the course.  He finished second at the Open, tied for second at the Bridgestone Invitational and finished third at the PGA Championship.  But the victory in Boston marks his first on Tour since 2009.  Signaling a turn-around for the Swede whose rank has been on a bit of a roller coaster the last few seasons.  Going from as high as number four in 2009 to as low as 230 in 2012, Stenson is now up to number 10 and looking to stay on that end of the spectrum.
