Shell Houston Open off to Interesting Start
by Maura Hutchinson
The “practice” got off to a great start for some. Including Bill Haas and Charley Hoffman, who share the lead after first round 65s. Phil Mickelson surprisingly proved he could bounce back from his withdrawal from last week’s Texas Open. With the pulled muscle in his right side looking to be under control the Callaway player finished Thursday with an impressive 4-under 68.
Mickelson told reporters afterwards, “I am surprised because I was worried when it happened about the Masters and I was certainly worried about Houston. But it has healed a lot quicker than I thought so I really didn't think about it.”
The 43-year-old will be hoping to continue the strong start as the second round gets under way today at the Golf Club of Houston.
For others, Houston didn’t go exactly to plan. Dustin Johnston withdrew from the tournament last night following a disappointing 8-over 80, with no official reason being given as of yet.
