The European Father Son Golf Championship

by Maura Hutchinson

Back in late October as the UK began to prepare for the cold spells the end of Autumn inevitably signal, a number of father and son golf teams descended upon Valle de Este Golf Resort in Spain hoping to be the 2013 victors of the annual European Father Son Golf Championship.

With teams coming from across the globe including the USA, Austria, Germany, Denmark and the UK, the competition and tournament continues to gain strength and notoriety.  The gorgeous weather in Almeria only helped to add to the excitement and with teams bringing along their own cheering sections, including mothers, siblings and grandparents an incredible family vibe soon took hold of the event.

The Championship started with a Charity Day on Tuesday the 29th of October in support of Save the Children and raised over €1,200 before tournament play officially began on Wednesday.

Over the three days of play it was a tight battle for both the Scratch and Handicap Titles.  David and George Mills, runners-up from the 2012 tournament, proved they were out to conquer this year.  With the younger Mills, George sinking an 8-foot putt the father and son duo swiftly captured the Scratch Champions title.  While England’s Mark and Connor Jenkins narrowly won the Handicap Champions title just one point ahead of their rivals.

After an incredible finish to another year’s tournament, the European Father Son Golf Championship is now eagerly looking ahead to 2014, scheduled to take place in Andalucia, Spain from 27th October to 1st November.  With a Matchplay Qualifier being added to the schedule it’s a great time to sign up and enjoy the game of golf with your son!
