Thomas Bjorn Putts His Way to European Masters Title
by Maura Hutchinson
“It was to be my week,” said Bjorn. “I have got a long love relationship with this golf course.”
The 42-year-old made a strong charge for the lead on Sunday, firmly hitting the front nine and carding five birdies in the first eight holes. Bjorn’s fine form and consistency took him the top of the leaderboard with a two-stroke cushion.
With Lee, the overnight leader close behind and fog continuing to be an issue on the course, the Dane missed birdies on the 11th and 12th. With both men finishing at 20-under a playoff ensued from which Bjorn emerged victorious.
Telling europeantour.com afterwards, “It was nice to do that in a play-off. I have had a hard time dealing with pressure situations and there is no more pressure than that.”
