It’s celebrating its 100th Birthday
2019 marks Pebble Beach’s 100th anniversary. Founded by Samuel F.B. Morse, the course was designed by amateurs Jack Neville and Douglas Grant. With the two paying particular attention to the stunning coastal landscape. Back then sheep were the greens keepers and Pebble Beach wouldn’t see its first U.S. Open until 1972, although it did host the prestigious U.S. Amateur in 1929.
A Couple Famous Owners
In 1999 a group of concerned citizens got together to ensure the history of Pebble Beach was preserved for future generations. You might recognise a couple of the owners. 20 years ago Clint Eastwood, Arnold Palmer and a “few” others bought Pebble Beach for a cool $820 million.
Sixth time host
Pebble Beach is about to host the U.S. Open for the sixth time, more than any other course in the last 50 years. Previous winners include Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Tom Kite, Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell.
#1 Public Golf Course in America
Pebble Beach is highly regarded as one of the best courses in America. The idyllic scenery and challenging course help to make it a top choice on any serious golfer’s bucket list. The fact that it’s a public course means you could actually play here…for a hefty price. It’s $550 for a round, not including your caddie or cart fee. But man it would be worth it!
Historic Moments for Pebble Beach still ahead…
In 2017 it was announced by the USGA that Pebble Beach would be hosting its first U.S. Women’s Open in 2023, as well as the 2027 U.S. Open.
“This announcement is a milestone in the history of Pebble Beach and one we are thrilled about, especially as we prepare to host the U.S. Amateur in 2018 and U.S. Open in 2019 during our centennial celebration. To be entrusted with hosting our seventh U.S. Open, and to be given the honor of hosting our first U.S. Women’s Open, is truly special and exciting for all of us here at Pebble Beach,” Bill Perocchi, CEO of Pebble Beach Company said at the time.
