The 24-year-old is total proof that no matter how bad things look you must never give up on your dreams. Rutherford, who spent 8-weeks bed-bound after being hit by a car in February, didn’t expect to be playing golf at all this season, let alone play well enough to earn a spot on next year’s European Tour!
After passing through the first and second stages of Qualifying School, Rutherford headed to PGA Catalunya Resort for the third and final stage last week. Finishing at 5-under to earn his card after an incredible six rounds of 72-72-70-66-68-75.Can't believe I will be playing on the @EuropeanTour next season. “At the start of the year I was hit by a car and fractured my spine, broke my foot and did some damage to my knee,” Rutherford told the Europeantour.com.
“I didn’t actually think I’d play all season. I was hopeful to be back at the start of next year. But recovery went well, so I thought I’d go for the First Stage just to see how it’d go and played nicely. At the Second Stage I just kept the ball rolling and played well.”
The determined golfer is now anxiously looking forward to next season on Tour. Where he hopes to be able to continue the hard work and mental fortitude that helped him overcome his injuries earlier in the year.
“I’ve just got to enjoy next season as much as I can. I’ve got to put some time in, but I know my game’s good enough,” said Rutherford.
Adding, “If I can keep progressing in the right way then hopefully I’ll have a good season.”
