Zac Blair Hits himself in the Head with Putter and Gets Disqualified

American golfer Zac Blair was disqualified from last week’s Wells Fargo Championship for using a putter he bent by hitting himself in the head.

We’re not kidding –

After missing a birdie putt on the fifth hole last Friday, Blair hit himself in the head with his own putter out of frustration before tapping it in. The Titleist player only realised on the next hole that he had damaged the putter on his head leaving the club slightly bent.

As soon as Blair discovered the damage he relayed the information to officials and was subsequently disqualified for using a “non-conforming club.” According to Rule 4-3b, “If, during a stipulated round, a player’s club is damaged other than in the normal course of play rendering it non-conforming or changing its playing characteristics, the club must not subsequently be used or replaced during the round.”

At this point in the tournament Blair was 7-over and unlikely to make the cut but we admire his honesty and his forthcoming apology to fans stating #GottaDoBetter. We also loved the hilarious GIF Blair posted to try and illustrate the exact moment his putter and head made contact courtesy of Woody Austin.

As for what Blair’s up to now – he’s currently at TPC Sawgrass getting ready for this week’s The Players Championship. And don’t worry the guys at Titleist have already fixed his putter so it now “conforms!”
