America Conquerors Great Britain and Ireland at the Walker Cup
The Walker Cup went back to its roots this year, returning to the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York.  The gorgeous venue where the iconic amateur event began in 1922 hosted the 44th tournament this year as the American team claimed its 17-9 victory over Great Britain and Ireland on Sunday.

Building on the fantastic momentum generated from Saturday’s singles matches, America came in ready to fight on Sunday.  Mid-amateur Nathan Smith secured their triumph beating England’s Nathan Kimsey 4-3 in the fifth singles match.

The 35-year financial advisor from Pittsburgh had been weary in 2011 of his chances of even making the team.  With the new USGA rule requiring two mid-ams be on the roster Smith and 45-year-old Todd White rounded out the American side and proved they’re capable of keeping up with the college kids.

“It’s the best feeling in the world right now,” said Smith.  “This ranks right at the top of my list.  I’ve never wanted a point so much in my life.”
