Following her recent retirement, Golfonline takes a look at the career of Annika Sorenstam, the most successful female golfer ever.
Sorenstam was born on the outskirts of Stockholm in October 1970. In her youth she excelled at a range of sports, including tennis, skiing and football but it was on the golf course that she found her greatest talent. At the age of 12 Annika began to play with her sister Charlotta and proved to be a natural, quickly attaining an impressive handicap of 54.
It is rumoured that due to shyness, the young Sorenstam deliberately missed what would have been winning shots, in order to avoid giving a winners speech. She was quickly cured of this shyness and rose to prominence, becoming the female World Amateur champion in 1992.
After a spell working as an assistant at the Swedish PGA, Sorenstam moved to the U.S.A to attend the University of Arizona, where she carried on her impressive form. In 1992 she made it to the womens open, finishing in a creditable 63rd place. As a result of this, Annika was invited to play in the 3 LPGA tournaments in 1994, where she finished T38th, 4th, and T9th. In the same year, she was awarded the European tour rookie of the year. This proved to be an eventful year for Sorenstam as she also achieved what would prove to be the first of many professional wins at the Australian Open.
Throughout the 1990s and into the 21st century, Sorenstam has established herself as the worlds number one female golfer, with a host of accolades including 10 Majors titles. She recently bowed out of the professional game at the 2008 Womens British Open, having firmly established herself as the worlds number one female golfer.
None of these achievements would have been possible without the backing of Sorenstams sponsors,
Callaway golf, who have provided the equipment which has helped her to become so successful over the years.
