U.S. Aims to Re-Energise Golf with New 15-inch Holes
As the number of active golfers around the globe continues to decline, industry insiders are trying to find the best way to bring back and temp new players onto the course.  So will a 15-inch hole be the way forward?

An initiative to increase hole sizes is being trialed at 100 golf courses across the United States.  It is hoped the larger holes will help players to lower scores and complete rounds in less time, ultimately increasing the overall enjoyment of golf.

TaylorMade players Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia tested out the new holes just after last month’s Masters Tournament at Georgia’s Reynolds Plantation.  Both believe it will be an excellent way to encourage more people to take up the sport they love.

“A 15-inch hole could help junior golfers, beginning golfers and older golfers score better, play faster and like golf more,” stated Garcia.

It is estimated that the U.S. has lost around 5 million golfers in the last decade.  With many agreeing now is the time to figure out why and how best to lure these numbers back.

“It is clear our game needs something to recapture the incredible growth and momentum we were experiencing a decade ago,” says the CEO of TaylorMade-adidas Golf, Mark King.  “Whether it is this 15-inch-cup concept or an idea that comes in from outside the industry, we need to spark a revolution that will bring new participants to the game.”
