P790 – Where Metal meets Mettle

FACT FINDER:

The third generation of the P790 features the incredible SPEEDFOAM Air, newly engineered to be 69% lighter than its predecessor. It provides up to 3.5g of weight savings that has been redistributed to help further optimise launch conditions, delivering a sweet sound, solid feel with a fast, flexible face.

PROS:

Awesome look, feel and sound. A superior players’ distance iron that is geared towards those who favour a sleek forged iron look.

CONS:

They’re pricey. But mid-handicappers looking for a premium set of irons might not be bothered.

“Literally the most ridiculous and forgiving irons out there. Super forgiving and easy to hit. Ball pops up and distances super easy to control. Literally the best-looking irons on the market. Can’t see why anyone would go for anything else (obviously if a fitting says otherwise, then do!), but if you are buying off the shelf... look no further” – James, November 2021

GARY’S VERDICT: Outstanding irons in terms of distance and forgiveness. These are a great iron for mid to low handicap players. The feel is so good and mis-hits are longer.

P770 – Tour Validated

FACT FINDER:

Utilising a forged hollow body construction, the P770s use visual cues including a thin topline, less offset and a shorter blade length than the P790s to help pack in as much distance and forgiveness as possible. Precision milled grooves have been employed to help optimise spin control and tour-validated contours offer the clean crisp look that appeals to the better player.

PROS:

Specifically engineered to deliver P790 performance in a smaller, more compact package, the P770s will appeal to the better players out there.

CONS:

Favoured by some of the greatest players in the world, these are not the irons for game-improvers or high handicappers.

“The P770s look absolutely stunning and marry perfectly into my Vokey SM7 wedges (similar top line and club head size)” – Brendan, January 2021

GARY’S VERDICT: TaylorMade have now released the p770 iron which promises to be a slightly toned-down version of the p790. The first thing to say about the p770 is that it is a truly stunning iron with beautiful clean lines and minimalistic TaylorMade branding.

P7 MC – Pure Precision and Control

FACT FINDER:

Classic shaping and minimal offset deliver control and precision, while perimeter weighting offers the right touch of forgiveness in the P7 MC irons. This refined muscle cavity shape was derived from the previous generation P750s. Utilising a new backbar geometry designed to elevate feel, engineers have moved mass up behind the face to support the point of impact. Compact Grain Forging ensures a tighter, more compact grain structure designed to provide the most solid, consistent feel possible.

PROS:

Painstakingly crafted to the highest quality, the perfect combo of performance, feel and shot making.

CONS:

Not much different from the P7 MB and low on forgiveness.

Classic look that inspires more confidence when looking down have had a few off-centre hits but haven't seen much of a drop off in distance great clubs from the P7 range,” – Daniel, January 2021

GARY’S VERDICT: The TaylorMade P7MC irons are a great choice for anyone from the plus handicap to the single digit player looking to improve. What makes these irons more accessible are slightly wider soles and the perimeter weighting. To be very clear, the soles of the P7MC are not wide compared to most irons.

P7 MB – Pass the Butter

FACT FINDER:

A seamless blend of traditional muscle back iron performance with a contemporary look and design the modern player will appreciate. Designed using the feedback of some of the greatest golfers in the world, the P7 MB irons feature a thin topline, progressive offset and narrow sole. Like the P7 MC, Compact Grain Forging using 1025 carbon steel results in a compact grain structure designed to provide the most solid, consistent feel possible.

PROS:

A pure blade made with the finest craftsmanship. A truly stunning looking iron.

CONS:

Not much forgiveness.

“This is a great golf club. Stunning look and awesome feel when hit on the sweet spot. The return of a good hit is absolutely delightful,” – Dan, March 2021

GARY’S VERDICT: They are forged from 1025 carbon steel with a machine-milled face comprising the most aggressive score lines in TaylorMade's growing arsenal. The most eyebrow raising feature of these clubs is no doubt the mirrored surface across the backbar.

Stealth – FAST and FORGIVING

FACT FINDER:

This year TaylorMade has released just one model in the game-improvement irons department, with the Stealth replacing the SIM2 Max and the SIM2 Max OS. Created from a single piece of forged iron, the Stealth is geared towards high-handicappers, featuring offset, a thick topline and generous length from the heel to toe. TaylorMade’s exclusive Cap Back Design with Toe Wrap construction allows Stealth Irons to expand on the distance, forgiveness and feel benefitted from the original technology.

PROS:

Great look, feel and forgiveness. A 450SS face has an intelligently positioned sweet spot spanning the most common impact zones to deliver explosive ball speeds and consistency in all the right places.

CONS:

High price point may put off some in the game-improvement category.

“These irons are incredible. I’ve had Callaway Epic irons previously and just started using the TM Stealths. Aggressive lofts enable better distance, very forgiving for that strike that isn’t from the middle of the club and look great. With hindsight I would have added better grips as standard are a little basic. Very pleased and recommend,” – John, April 2022

GARY’S VERDICT: Taylormade Stealth irons get the ball up easily, quickly, and carry a looong way. The heads look forgiving and give you great results without needing great contact. They are perfect game improvement mid handicapper irons in my opinion. Go ahead and put the on your short list to test if you're in the market
